Alpha-Cypermethrin 100 g/L EC insecticide

  • Overview
  • Recommended Products
This product is a 100 g/L alpha-cypermethrin emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation, belonging to the pyrethroid class of broad-spectrum contact and stomach-action insecticides. Alpha-cypermethrin is a Type II pyrethroid consisting of the two most biologically active cis-isomers of cypermethrin, which significantly enhances its insecticidal potency compared to standard cypermethrin. It acts primarily by modulating voltage-gated sodium channels in the insect nervous system, prolonging channel opening and causing repetitive nerve firing, paralysis, and death. It exhibits strong lipophilicity, facilitating rapid penetration through the insect cuticle, with rapid knockdown and long-lasting residual control.
Suitable for various crops such as cotton, rice, cereals (wheat, maize, sorghum), soybeans, sunflowers, sugar beets, vegetables (cabbage, tomato, eggplant, pepper, okra, cucumber, etc.), fruit trees (citrus, apple, mango, peach), grapes, tea, coffee, tobacco, and ornamental plants. It is used to control a wide range of insect pests including aphids, thrips, bollworms, diamondback moth, cutworms, armyworms, leafhoppers, whiteflies, leafminers, flea beetles, stem borers, and fruit borers. Please use according to the recommended dosage within the registered and approved areas.

Key Functions

Alpha-cypermethrin is a synthetic Type II pyrethroid insecticide developed by Shell (later acquired by BASF) and first introduced in the 1980s. It is an enriched isomeric formulation consisting of the two most biologically active cis-isomers of cypermethrin, which significantly enhances its insecticidal potency compared to standard cypermethrin — allowing for lower application rates to achieve equivalent or superior pest control. Alpha-cypermethrin acts primarily on the insect nervous system by modulating voltage-gated sodium channels (Nav). As a Type II pyrethroid, it binds to sodium channels in the neuronal membranes, preventing them from closing promptly after activation and causing a prolonged influx of sodium ions into the nerve cell. This leads to repetitive and uncontrolled firing of neurons, resulting in tremors, muscle spasms, lack of coordination, paralysis, and ultimately death of the insect. This mechanism of action is classified as IRAC Group 3A (Sodium channel modulators — Pyrethroids, Pyrethrins). The compound exhibits strong lipophilicity, which facilitates rapid adsorption onto the insect cuticle and efficient penetration into the insect body, resulting in a rapid knockdown effect. Alpha-cypermethrin is a non-systemic insecticide with predominantly contact and stomach action. It also exhibits an anti-feeding effect, causing insects to stop feeding soon after exposure, and has significant ovicidal and repellent activity. It has low water solubility and low vapor pressure, providing good rainfastness and residual activity on treated surfaces. Alpha-cypermethrin is highly effective against a broad spectrum of chewing and sucking insect pests, particularly Lepidoptera (bollworms, budworms, cutworms, armyworms, diamondback moth), Coleoptera (weevils), and Hemiptera (aphids). It is highly toxic to aquatic organisms (fish and aquatic invertebrates) and honeybees; appropriate precautions must be taken during application to minimize non-target exposure. The repeated use of alpha-cypermethrin and other Group 3A insecticides can lead to the development of resistance in pest populations; therefore, rotation with insecticides from different chemical groups with different modes of action is recommended as part of Insect Resistance Management (IRM) programs.

Key Benefits

1. Broad-spectrum insecticidal activity effectively controlling a wide range of agricultural and horticultural insect pests, including aphids, thrips, leafhoppers, bollworms, pink bollworms, diamondback moth, cabbage worm, cutworms, armyworms, stem borers, leafminers, flea beetles, whiteflies, and many others.
2. Wide range of application, suitable for cotton, rice, cereals (wheat, maize, sorghum), soybeans, sunflowers, sugar beets, vegetables (cabbage, tomato, eggplant, pepper, okra, cucumber, etc.), fruit trees (citrus, apple, mango, peach), grapes, tea, coffee, tobacco, and ornamental plants.
3. High insecticidal potency — alpha-cypermethrin is an enriched formulation containing the two most biologically active cis-isomers of cypermethrin, providing higher potency and faster knockdown than standard cypermethrin. This allows for lower application rates to achieve equivalent or superior pest control.
4. Rapid knockdown effect — strong lipophilicity facilitates rapid penetration through the insect cuticle, causing insects to stop feeding and moving soon after contact, with significant mortality achieved shortly thereafter.
5. Unique mode of action — Type II pyrethroid, IRAC Group 3A (sodium channel modulator), with no cross-resistance to organophosphates and carbamates; suitable for Insect Resistance Management (IRM) and rotation programs.
6. Long-lasting residual activity — low water solubility and low vapor pressure provide good rainfastness and extended protection on treated crops.
7. Anti-feeding effect — exposed insects cease feeding soon after treatment, reducing direct crop damage even before mortality occurs.
8. Ovicidal and repellent activity — provides additional control against eggs and discourages pest re-infestation, offering comprehensive protection throughout the pest life cycle.
9. Emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation — good stability, easy to measure and mix, suitable for foliar spray application with conventional equipment.
10. Compatible with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs when used as directed, with appropriate measures to protect pollinators and aquatic organisms.
